New year, new performance culture.

Over the last decade, sneakers became one of fashion’s most legible forms of cultural literacy. Knowing the archive. The drop. Taste operated as gatekeeping, knowledge conferred status. That system is reorganising around performance.

According to The Business of Fashion reporting citing Circana data, performance footwear is now driving category growth, with running and football-inspired releases posting double-digit gains, while lifestyle-led sneaker segments are losing momentum.

That shift is being encoded into what brands choose to launch. Salomon continues to lead from an endurance-first position, with the 2026 launch Aero Glide 4 (and GRVL version) extending its trail authority into everyday performance. HOKA is refining its daily trainer infrastructure through the Mach series, Mach 7 to launch in 2026. On’s Cloudsurfer updates make performance legible beyond sport contexts. New Balance’s 1080v15 refresh prioritises scale and refinement over disruption, while Nike continues to push high-performance technology into trail and mixed terrain through the next phase of ACG Ultrafly.

Football intensifies this further. As KARLA OTTO and Lefty’s cultural analysis shows, football fandom operates as a global belief system built on belonging, loyalty and repetition o. That logic aligns directly with the performance growth. Blokecore is not nostalgia, it is fashion borrowing the grammar of allegiance. Football footwear does not ask if you like it, it asks who you are with, over time.

What we are seeing is a move away from taste-as-knowledge toward identity-as-practice. Running shoes and football silhouettes are moving into everyday life, not as aesthetic statements but proof of participation. Performance culture operates through ritual. Run clubs meet weekly, routes repeat, kits recur and shoes age publicly. Strava data shows running club participation accelerating through 2024 and again in 2025, not as content but as infrastructure - and a restructuring of time.

Digital culture has flattened cultural rhythm. Seasons, drops and release cycles have collapsed into a continuous present, where feeds reorder time and everything is always now. In that environment, performance restores sequence through training cycles and calendars, reintroducing before and after, and progress measured slowly. Performance footwear succeeds because it reintroduces time, discipline and narrative into a culture that has lost shared temporal markers.

Athletes now hold authority. Not as style icons, but as ethical figures. They embody discipline, effort and measurable performance. That credibility now transfers to product.

Retro sneakers have become the dependable, stabilising background layer. The acceleration of performance is not about speed and function. It is about how the desired meaning is made. Sneakers no longer accumulate status - they produce it through making visible time, practice and sustained repetition.

I end this year in Florence, watching time behave differently. Light moves slowly here. Stone absorbs centuries without urgency. Craft is not performed, it is practiced.
