From conflict to grace: REPOSSI + Sterling Ruby
Jewellery and art share a singular power: to hold emotion in matter. Both exist at human scale, both invite contemplation through form, both turn material into meaning. The jewel, like art, offers continuity. A trace of the maker’s hand, and a quiet reminder that being human is not trivial.
It’s sacred.
Sterling Ruby has spent the past decade exploring how conflict can be transformed into beauty. His recent exhibition at MaMo, on the roof of Le Corbusier’s Cité Radieuse in Marseille, placed two monumental works, DOUBLE CANDLE and WALL, in dialogue with one of the twentieth century’s most radical architectural visions. Bronze forms recalling sentinels or twin candles rose above the city, symbols of resilience and memory; below them, a vast spray painting evoked the blurred horizon between structure and atmosphere.
A similar dialogue now continues at a different scale. Repossi’s new collaboration with the artist, unveiled today at Gagosian in Paris, makes that truth of the sacred tangible. The limited-edition brooch in 18-karat champagne gold, set with a single diamond, was inspired by Ruby’s white wooden sculpture a weapon ending in a flower: a long beam tipped with a painted white flower, created as a meditation on peace.
Ruby described it simply: “It represents peace - like a weapon ending in a flower.” A meditation on transforming conflict into beauty. Repossi’s masterful translation of that idea turns sculpture into ornament, aggression into grace; a gesture of stillness carried on the body.
Luxury’s dialogue with art is often visual. Here, it becomes tactile. An intimacy of touch, weight, and aura.
